Yukembruk Place Naming Ceremony
How we were gifted with an Indigenous name
On Saturday 14 November 2020 Cooleman Court was very privileged to experience a traditional Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and song by Elder Uncle Billy ‘T’ Tompkins.
It was a moment of still, peace and appreciation for Ngunnawal Country, its people, rich culture and history.
As part of the ceremony, Uncle Billy ‘T’ gifted Cooleman Court with our own special Indigenous name of ‘Yukembruk Place’ which means ‘Place of the Crows’. Crows are special to the local area and the crows were in full song throughout the ceremony.
The smoking ceremony was the first step in our commitment to incorporating local Indigenous culture within Cooleman Court's activities and core-being. Visit here to learn more about how we have furthered our commitment.
